Returning to Workforce, Mother Reinvigorates Tech Skills

Cristal King—who left her job as a programmer and analyst more than a decade ago to take care of her young family—knew she needed to sharpen her skills and learn new computer language in order to get back into the rapidly changing technology job market.

“Before I left, web development wasn’t nearly as advanced and robust as it is now,” said Cristal. “I know how quickly technology changes and I knew that I needed to have the skill-set that goes along with it.”

According to the Harvard Business Review, 90 percent of women who leave their jobs to take care of their family, like Cristal, said they want to reboot their careers and get back into the workforce.

Cristal wasn’t sure exactly where to go to get the training she needed to make this happen. When she first decided that she wanted a job in technology, after working as a sales representative for U.S. Healthcare, she enrolled and graduated from The Chubb Institute. At the time, web development was still in its infancy.

Women Help Women Move into High-Tech Careers

They may vary in age and have different personal and professional backgrounds but a team of women who recently completed an intensive six-month computer coding program at Rutgers believes that women need to stick together to move forward in the high-tech industry. 

“Women represent more than half of our population,” said Nancy Lukas, a former teacher who graduated from Rutgers Coding Bootcamp after working for more than 20 years as a teacher. “We use technology as much as men and it is crucial for women to be part of the design and implementation of this technology.”

That’s why Nancy and four other women who met at Rutgers Coding Bootcamp decided to create a social networking application called The Loop that they say will offer help and support women in the high-tech industry who want to break into what has traditionally been a male-dominated field.

Like Son, Like Father: Two Generations Take on Challenge of Coding Bootcamp

At 61, after a decade away from computer programming, Tom Keel thought his computer coding days were well behind him.

That was until Tom decided to jump back in and follow his son, Seth, to Bootcamp. After reading about the exciting new coding opportunities of the bootcamp-style class his son would be taking, Tom felt a renewed sense of interest in the field and decided to join him. It’s not often that two generations get to experience the same educational opportunity, and it proved to be an exciting challenge for the father and son duo. 

Now both father and son are newly minted graduates of the Rutgers Coding Bootcamp after working side-by-side for 24 highly intensive weeks to develop skills as “full stack” software coders.

The Keels' story is unusual. They are the only father and son duo out of 375 bootcampers who have gone through the program since it began last fall.

At the Speed of Light: Fiber Connects Campus to Media World

The historic Rutgers 250th anniversary commencement in May 2016 was broadcast around the world, and Rutgers professors regularly go “live” on television—all via a 21st-century invention: optical fiber optic cable.

Peter Troost, assistant director of broadcast operations/production for Rutgers iTV Studio, answered queries about how fiber optic services work at Rutgers:

Q: How did the commencement broadcast get from the stadium to the world?

A: We used an internal university fiber optic line running from High Point Solutions Stadium to the Rutgers iTV Studio on Berrue Circle on Livingston campus. The feed from the production control room at the stadium was transmitted on that line to the studio—and then to AMV Gateway, a video communications company in Carteret, which then retransmitted the feed across the Hudson River to LIVESTREAM, a media streaming service.

CTE Makerspace Makeover Challenge

The U.S. Department of Education announced the ten prize winners in the CTE Makeover Challenge at the ‘White House Champions of Change for Making’ event. Our own Rick Anderson, director of Virtual Worlds, was a judge on the review panel. Over 640 high schools from 50 states designed makerspaces that strengthen next-generation career and technical skills. Each winner will receive $20,000 in cash and a share of in-kind prizes from the $375,000 sponsor prize pool to build or renovate their makerspace.

The online course environment is an attractive instructional option for graduate-level programs. In fields as diverse as business and social work, online courses draw people who work full-time, have family responsibilities, and live some distance from campus.

Dilafruz Nazarova knew that the students coming to her Rutgers political science course shared these characteristics. She also knew that online learning could offer a rigorous learning environment.

But she didn’t know how to get there.

While she had taught in face-to-face classrooms, Nazarova wanted professional guidance in transitioning to an online teaching environment. At first she was unsure about what instructional technology could offer her and her students.

New State-of-the-Art Hands-On Radon Training Facility Built This Summer at Rutgers

For over 25 years, the Eastern Regional Radon Training Center (ERRTC) at Rutgers University has been providing training in radon measurement and mitigation to professionals throughout the country. To improve the learning experience for students, the ERRTC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art training facility on the Cook Campus in summer 2015.

“Watching the new radon training facility being built from the ground up has been really interesting,” said Program Coordinator Pamela Springard-Mayer.

The new facility was used for the first time by students attending the July 15 Radon Mitigation class.

In the past, the hands-on portions of the Rutgers three-day Radon Mitigation Proficiency Course were taught at Rutgers' Environmental Health and Safety Building (affectionately known as "the slab") on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway.

The (Environmental) Science of Investigation: Interactive Forensics Training Helps Environmental Professionals Solve Petroleum Contamination Cases

When a site is contaminated with petroleum products, there are many questions. How did it happen? When did it happen? And, most importantly, who is responsible for paying to clean it up?

This fall, Rutgers University's Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) will help professionals answer those questions in its completely revamped Environmental Forensics training course.

Designed for environmental consultants, attorneys, hazardous material emergency responders and professionals in related fields, the two-day class (September 9-10, 2015) will reveal the science behind the environmental forensics of petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbon geochemistry. Students will also learn about new trends in professional investigations.
