PSM Bootcamp grads

The Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program, in collaboration with the New Jersey Technology Council, co-sponsored the Entrepreneur Bootcamp on April 23, 2013 at the Busch Campus Student Center.  The intensive day long conference is a "must attend" program for early stage entrepreneurs, individuals seeking to start a technology company, pharmaceutical and IT professionals contemplating a transition. Current PSM students and alumni participated in the program.

10th Annual Rutgers Online Learning Conference Brings Record Crowd

New Brunswick, N.J. - On March 18, 2019, the nation’s top experts in online education and hybrid learning gathered at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick for the 10th Annual Rutgers Online Learning Conference (RUOnlineCon) to learn about advances in learning technology and share best practices for effective use of that technology. Attendees discussed new instructional paradigms, ancillary software and sites, and faculty training and resources among other topics.

 

During his opening remarks, Richard J. Novak, Vice President for continuing studies and distance education, emphasized Rutgers’ reputation as pioneers in online learning. Twenty years ago, Rutgers was one of the first universities to use a learning management system (LMS) for online classes. Ten years ago, Novak and his colleagues founded RUOnlineCon. He said, “When we started, RUOnlineCon was a dream. We didn’t know if we could get 50 people to come. At the first conference, we had 100 people.”

Rutgers Professional Science Master's students take advantage of new telepresence classroom and visit USPTO

Graduate students from Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program and The Ohio State University shared a course this summer using the new video-enhanced learning facilities in Tillet Hall.  The course, on Intellectual Property Strategy, has been offered by Rutgers for the past 6 years. There were 54 students total, eight from OSU's Fisher College of Business, and 46 from Rutgers. The new classroom in Tillet Hall has voice activated microphones and immersive cameras so that the students and lecturers could feel connected. In addition to the telepresence classroom, there were 18 remote students who connected through a web conferencing system. The course covered the fundamentals of intellectual property, evaluating patent portfolios, and technology transfer and included many guest lectures from experts in the field. The lectures alternated between New Jersey and Rutgers.

Retired Wall Street Tech Expert Sharpens Skills at Rutgers Coding Bootcamp

John Bruno chuckles looking back at the dismal outcome of his first computer course more than 40 years ago.

“It was the only course I ever failed,” Bruno said. “I remember my professor telling me never to go near a computer in my career.”

Luckily, Bruno, 63, didn’t listen. In fact, he aced his subsequent computer tech classes. That opened a 40-year career in information technology, where he helped revolutionize data management on Wall Street. He even taught coding courses at night.

After retiring, Bruno took on a new challenge, to create a regulatory and compliance application and build it himself. Feeling a bit rusty in his coding skills, he enrolled in the Rutgers Coding Bootcamp, a six-month intensive program offered by the Division of Continuing Studies.

A Q&A with Rutgers Online Learning Conference Keynote Speaker Mindy Hintze

Students today are digital natives, and if we do not meet them where they are, in that digital space, we are going to lose them, says Mindy Hintze, upcoming keynote speaker for the Rutgers Online Learning Conference to be held on March 13, 2017. “Online learning is here to stay,” she relates. Hintze speaks from experience; she completed her own master’s degree coursework entirely online, which allowed her to study anytime, anywhere, while still working and caring for her family.

Only 10 percent of students were enrolled in online learning in 2002, but that figure jumped to 30 percent by 2010, Hintze says. About 5.8 million students were enrolled in at least one distance learning course in fall 2014, according to Online Report Card:  Tracking Online Education in the United States,´ in a report by Babson Survey Research Group.

When it comes to loose change – the pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that seem to multiply daily – most people throw it into some type of a container and vow to count it later. But the pile usually gets bigger, the jar becomes full and exactly how much money has been saved becomes a mystery.

“It’s something that everyone can relate to,” said Jeffrey Abraham, 27, of Livingston. “You empty your pockets, put the change aside and tell yourself that you’ll count it later.”

Retired Teacher Goes Back to School to Update Tech Skills for New Career

Nancy Lukas, who retired in 2015 after spending 20 years as a teacher, always loved technology. She was one of the first teachers to have her own website, loved using a SmartBoard and made her fourth grade students create podcasts about important environmental issues.

Still, Nancy, who has always liked a good challenge, never thought this lifelong interest would take her on a totally different career path. That was until her daughter told her about the

Rutgers Coding Bootcamp, a six-month intensive program offered by the Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies that provides the skills needed to become a “full stack” software coder.

“There’s no way I ever pictured myself going in a different direction,” said Nancy, 52, who taught high school, middle school and elementary school students, both English and math. “I imagined teaching for 20 more years but I decided that I had other talents that I needed to explore.”
