Far from being a surf-and-sun session with a little learning mixed in, it offered students intensive, intimate courses driven by practical considerations, said Liz Beasley, director of the summer session and special projects at Rutgers-New Brunswick.

“We’re always looking for new ways to get courses to the students,” she explained. “A lot of them work part-time or full-time. If they’re working, they have to cut back on the credits they take. The summer and winter courses are important to them for graduating in a timely manner.”

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers University-New Brunswick’ s Summer Session kicked off this week with nearly 14,000 enrollments in more than 2,300 course sections for one of the nation’s largest summer higher educational programs. The number of students enrolled totals nearly one-third of the New Brunswick undergraduate population.

The 10,541 students enrolled in Summer Session make up 33 percent of the New Brunswick-Piscataway undergraduate student body of more than 32,000.

Rutgers Summer Session has drawn strong interest from students seeking science courses, visiting students and students who combine work and school. “We’re seeing strong enrollments in a wide range of academic fields from a diverse body of students,” noted Elizabeth Beasley, director of Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session, a unit of Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies (DoCS). “Students who work while attending Rutgers and those with a double-major course load turn to Summer Session in significant numbers to keep on pace toward graduation.

Summer is approaching, which means sandy beaches, bathing suits and ... textbooks. The Jersey Shore is set to be more than a vacation destination this summer.

For the first time, Rutgers University is offering summer classes at the beach, called RU at the Shore.

Instead of paperback novels, Rutgers students might be bringing textbooks as their beach reading. The university will host 17 new undergraduate courses in Atlantic City, Cape May and Point Pleasant Beach.

University will offer 17 courses on its first Jersey Shore menu

            NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers University-New Brunswick’s Summer Session, with more than 2,200 course sections, already one of the nation’s largest summer programs, is adding a new component with 17 courses at the Jersey Shore.

            The decision to establish “RU at the Shore” for 2015 was made following a survey of more than 4,500 undergraduates here, with 1,200 students – nearly 27 percent – indicating they would spend time along the 130-mile coastline and would be interested in taking classes for credit. Summer Session offers extensive internship and research/travel opportunities in addition to undergraduate and graduate courses in 250 fields.

High-achieving high school students can experience university life, earn college credits, and get a head start on their post-secondary educations through Rutgers University’s Summer Scholars Program.

Summer Scholars, who must be high school juniors or younger, may take up to two Rutgers courses during Summer Session II (June 24-August 1), or Session III (July 8-August 14).

Students entering their junior or senior year of high school in fall 2013, who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, may apply to take introductory-level college courses. Exceptional students younger than 16 are considered on a case-by-case basis and are required to be interviewed and submit a PSAT or SAT score.

Scholarships covering 20 percent of the course tuition are available to students with a recommendation letter from their guidance counselor.

As one of the country’s largest summer sessions, Rutgers New Brunswick welcomes both Rutgers and visiting students, as well as qualifying high school students, for study during the summer on campus, online and in hybrid courses. This year’s sessions will run May 28-July 5, June 24-August 1, and July 8-August 14. Registration for all sessions begins February 18. Final dates to register vary by session.

The best of classroom and online education will be available to students enrolling in Rutgers’ Winter Session on the New Brunswick Campus this year as more courses are delivered in online and hybrid formats than ever before.

Responding to the increasing popularity of online education, Winter Session, December 21 through January 18, will offer nearly 40 percent of its courses in fully online or hybrid – part online, part classroom – formats. Online registration is in progress until December 3 for more than 100 traditional, online and hybrid courses.

Rutgers students like the flexibility that hybrid and online courses offer, and most students who have taken hybrid and/or online courses rate them equal to, or better, than traditional classroom courses in terms of their interactions with professors and classmates, engagement in the courses, and instructional methods.
