Get the Best of a 4-Year Food Science Degree in Just 5 Days at Rutgers This August

An instructor teaches students about food products in the Introduction to Food Science five-day short course at Rutgers.

Kimberly Smith had been working for only two weeks as a process engineer when she found herself struggling with an entirely new language – the lingo of food chemistry and microbiology.

“It was like a foreign language,” said Smith, who helps manufacture soups and other foods at Campbell’s Soup.

Last summer, she radically improved her fluency with an intensive five-day Introduction to Food Science class, offered by the Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) at Rutgers University.

“The course helped me understand the basic language of food product development,” she said.  Now she can better talk the multi-disciplinary talk that all good food scientists must master.

Rutgers’ Division of Continuing Studies is sponsoring the Fifth Annual HEROES Conference for profoundly gifted students in grades 6 to 10, January 19 and 20, at the Engineering Resource Center on the Busch Campus in Piscataway.

The two-day event, open to qualifying students, includes labs, workshops and classes taught by more than 50 volunteer Rutgers faculty, staff, alumni and students.  Participants may select from more than 50 programs covering such diverse topics as computer programming, robotics, literature, math, logic, philosophy, leadership, genetics and more.

To qualify to attend the conference as non-members of HEROES, middle school students must submit qualifying SAT, ACT, SCAT or EXPLORE scores. Students under the age of 16, who have not yet taken any of these tests but have scored in advanced proficient on at least one section of last year's NJASK, may register for either the Academic Talent Search or Writing Talent Search in order to attend the conference as applicants.
