Happy Endings for NJ's Unemployed: Grant-Funded Training Courses Provide Practical Skills & New Opportunities

The first part of Sergio Sosa’s story is far too familiar: the Union City resident was inches away from earning his Master’s degree in Biology from Rutgers, and was transitioning from full-time student to full-time assistant-in-training at a golf course. Just when he thought everything was falling into place, Sosa was laid off from his job in late 2012.

Yet by March 2013, Sosa (with degree in hand) was gainfully employed as Assistant Superintendent at two popular New York City-owned golf courses.

Sosa credits the Rutgers Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) and a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL) for helping him get there.

PSM Entrepreneur Bootcamp

PSM Bootcamp grads

The Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program, in collaboration with the New Jersey Technology Council, co-sponsored the Entrepreneur Bootcamp on April 23, 2013 at the Busch Campus Student Center.  The intensive day long conference is a "must attend" program for early stage entrepreneurs, individuals seeking to start a technology company, pharmaceutical and IT professionals contemplating a transition. Current PSM students and alumni participated in the program.

Learn, Teach, Create: Repeat

Artist, instructor, and Rutgers alumna Patricia Brace practices what she teaches: expanding communal awareness and access to art, through the combined acts of viewing, making, and learning about art.

“As an artist I am committed to building community, contributing to society, and collaborating with other artists and professionals. As a teacher it is important for me to role model these beliefs to my students,” Brace says. 

During the spring semester, Brace is the instructor for Passport to Art at the Zimmerli Art Museum on the College Avenue campus of Rutgers New Brunswick. The program, which has been offered for more than 15 years, provides opportunities for families to be creative together. Each workshop begins with an exhibition tour, followed by a project related to an aspect of the artwork on view.

Retired Teacher Goes Back to School to Update Tech Skills for New Career

Nancy Lukas, who retired in 2015 after spending 20 years as a teacher, always loved technology. She was one of the first teachers to have her own website, loved using a SmartBoard and made her fourth grade students create podcasts about important environmental issues.

Still, Nancy, who has always liked a good challenge, never thought this lifelong interest would take her on a totally different career path. That was until her daughter told her about the

Rutgers Coding Bootcamp, a six-month intensive program offered by the Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies that provides the skills needed to become a “full stack” software coder.

“There’s no way I ever pictured myself going in a different direction,” said Nancy, 52, who taught high school, middle school and elementary school students, both English and math. “I imagined teaching for 20 more years but I decided that I had other talents that I needed to explore.”

Returning to Workforce, Mother Reinvigorates Tech Skills

Cristal King—who left her job as a programmer and analyst more than a decade ago to take care of her young family—knew she needed to sharpen her skills and learn new computer language in order to get back into the rapidly changing technology job market.

“Before I left, web development wasn’t nearly as advanced and robust as it is now,” said Cristal. “I know how quickly technology changes and I knew that I needed to have the skill-set that goes along with it.”

According to the Harvard Business Review, 90 percent of women who leave their jobs to take care of their family, like Cristal, said they want to reboot their careers and get back into the workforce.

Cristal wasn’t sure exactly where to go to get the training she needed to make this happen. When she first decided that she wanted a job in technology, after working as a sales representative for U.S. Healthcare, she enrolled and graduated from The Chubb Institute. At the time, web development was still in its infancy.

Rutgers Alumni Take On Disney After On-Campus Hospitality Experience

Working at the Rutgers Inn and Conference Center primed pair for competitive internship program

Jaelynn Vizzi left for the Disney College Program just after Labor Day with her brand new Rutgers communications degree in hand.

Ramon Lucas, a 2013 Rutgers mathematics graduate, is already two years into his career at The Walt Disney Company after participating in the same Disney internship Vizzi just started.

Both individuals gained a world of experience on campus by serving people of diverse languages and cultures as resident coordinators at the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center (RUICC).

Working at the RUICC taught Vizzi how to help others overcome language barriers and acclimate to different cultures – a must since the inn drew guests from more than 42 countries in 2015. The experience primed Lucas and Vizzi for their four-month Disney internships.

As drones rise in popularity, their use is provoking new thinking on the possibilities. The U.S. Department of the Interior, the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Geological Survey already use drones to monitor wildlife populations without disturbing them. Amazon is testing drones that could deliver packages in as little as half an hour after an online purchase. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has teamed with other agencies on an experiment to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to spy on storms as they evolve.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the ten prize winners in the CTE Makeover Challenge at the ‘White House Champions of Change for Making’ event. Our own Rick Anderson, director of Virtual Worlds, was a judge on the review panel. Over 640 high schools from 50 states designed makerspaces that strengthen next-generation career and technical skills. Each winner will receive $20,000 in cash and a share of in-kind prizes from the $375,000 sponsor prize pool to build or renovate their makerspace.

Then, One Returns to School to Become the Teacher

In 1999, Joe Monzo, then chief financial officer for Ewing Township, NJ, had more than 20 years experience in the public sector. Looking for an opportunity to advance his career, he considered pursuing a master’s degree — a suggestion made by the mayor of Ewing Township at that time.

“I chose the Rutgers Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) program because of the name and the convenient location in Mercer County,” says Monzo. He started the program a year later and graduated with his EMPA degree in 2001.

The online course environment is an attractive instructional option for graduate-level programs. In fields as diverse as business and social work, online courses draw people who work full-time, have family responsibilities, and live some distance from campus.

Dilafruz Nazarova knew that the students coming to her Rutgers political science course shared these characteristics. She also knew that online learning could offer a rigorous learning environment.

But she didn’t know how to get there.

While she had taught in face-to-face classrooms, Nazarova wanted professional guidance in transitioning to an online teaching environment. At first she was unsure about what instructional technology could offer her and her students.
