PSM Bootcamp grads

The Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program, in collaboration with the New Jersey Technology Council, co-sponsored the Entrepreneur Bootcamp on April 23, 2013 at the Busch Campus Student Center.  The intensive day long conference is a "must attend" program for early stage entrepreneurs, individuals seeking to start a technology company, pharmaceutical and IT professionals contemplating a transition. Current PSM students and alumni participated in the program.

The president’s daughter has been kidnapped. “This is where you come in,” read the typewritten, terse instructions. “You are the chosen one. The fate of Sasha’s life is in your hands. If you choose to accept this, open the enclosed briefcase.”

The story is fiction, thankfully – but the briefcase is real. The small metal box unlatches to reveal a miniature computer, display and cables, along with instructions to create a spy camera to help solve the kidnapping.

Drones Will Be Focus of Pre-Engineering Summer Academy Certificate

As drones rise in popularity, their use is provoking new thinking on the possibilities. The U.S. Department of the Interior, the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Geological Survey already use drones to monitor wildlife populations without disturbing them. Amazon is testing drones that could deliver packages in as little as half an hour after an online purchase. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has teamed with other agencies on an experiment to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to spy on storms as they evolve.

CTE Makerspace Makeover Challenge

The U.S. Department of Education announced the ten prize winners in the CTE Makeover Challenge at the ‘White House Champions of Change for Making’ event. Our own Rick Anderson, director of Virtual Worlds, was a judge on the review panel. Over 640 high schools from 50 states designed makerspaces that strengthen next-generation career and technical skills. Each winner will receive $20,000 in cash and a share of in-kind prizes from the $375,000 sponsor prize pool to build or renovate their makerspace.

Rutgers Launches Pre-Engineering Summer Academy

Weeklong program introduces field to U.S., international high school students

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Rutgers University-New Brunswick Summer Session will launch a Pre-Engineering Summer Academy in 2016, a one-week, on-campus certificate program for high school students that introduces them to engineering fields through first-hand contact with practitioners and educators.

The new program is open to U.S. high school and international secondary school juniors and seniors, ages 16-18, and is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 6, 2016. Rutgers School of Engineering faculty members and practicing professional engineers serve as instructors. The academy faculty will introduce the students to disciplines including aerospace, biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, forensic and mechanical engineering. The integrated program involves lectures, demonstrations, hands-on projects, tours and field trips.

Rutgers Innovators Lead "Maker Movement"

ON THE LIVINGSTON CAMPUS of Rutgers University, tucked away off an industrial road, is an unassuming yellow wood frame building. From the outside, it looks like a Shaker house, maybe home to some administrative offices.

But on the second floor is a lab, with a state-of-the-art laser cutter that fills the entire room. Down the hall are 3-D printers, machine shop equipment, a computer lab and a room just for robotics, all open to use by students and faculty. A staff of engineers helps them bring their ideas to life — from student art projects to diagnostic equipment designed by faculty.

The (Environmental) Science of Investigation: Interactive Forensics Training Helps Environmental Professionals Solve Petroleum Contamination Cases

When a site is contaminated with petroleum products, there are many questions. How did it happen? When did it happen? And, most importantly, who is responsible for paying to clean it up?

This fall, Rutgers University's Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) will help professionals answer those questions in its completely revamped Environmental Forensics training course.

Designed for environmental consultants, attorneys, hazardous material emergency responders and professionals in related fields, the two-day class (September 9-10, 2015) will reveal the science behind the environmental forensics of petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbon geochemistry. Students will also learn about new trends in professional investigations.

The Wonders of Wetlands

Wetlands are essential components of our natural environment.  Providing shoreline protection, nursery for multiple freshwater and saltwater fishes, critical habitat for countless species of wildlife, storm water storage, nutrient filtration, sediment retention, niches that harbor unique species, shoreline protection and many other more subtle yet essential natural functions.  Legions of biologists, ecologists, and other scientists have studied and cataloged these diverse systems for decades.  

As the need to stem losses of these resources became more acute during the 1970’s and 1980’s, scientists endeavored to find ways in which degraded systems could be restored and new wetlands might be created.  These efforts led to some successful projects... and many not so successful projects. A few experts began to recognize that the failed sites typically had not adequately addressed replacement of hydrologic functions.

The Rutgers Makerspace, located at the Center for Innovation Education on the Rutgers Livingston Campus, provides students, educators, and entrepreneurs with a hands-on learning environment that is part classroom, part workshop, and part think tank. Also known as ‘hackerspaces’, ‘fab labs’, and ‘makelabs’, makerspaces are creative laboratories where members with common interests such as engineering, computer programming, inventing, graphic design, and others gather to share resources and knowledge, network, and build innovative creations.
