The online course environment is an attractive instructional option for graduate-level programs. In fields as diverse as business and social work, online courses draw people who work full-time, have family responsibilities, and live some distance from campus.

Dilafruz Nazarova knew that the students coming to her Rutgers political science course shared these characteristics. She also knew that online learning could offer a rigorous learning environment.

But she didn’t know how to get there.

While she had taught in face-to-face classrooms, Nazarova wanted professional guidance in transitioning to an online teaching environment. At first she was unsure about what instructional technology could offer her and her students.

Part 1: Creating An Online Course from Scratch

Dilafruz Nazarova was an accomplished scholar and advocate in human rights law when she arrived at Rutgers in 2010 to pursue a doctorate in political science. Born in Tajikistan and fluent in four languages, Nazarova had earned her law degree and worked for her government and international organizations focusing on international law.

She wanted to dive into yet another field—teaching online—but lacked experience and expertise.

But she’s now an enthusiastic and attentive online learning instructor—crediting the Rutgers Online Learning Conference (#RUOnlineCon), the instructional design teams available at Rutgers, and her political science department for her takeoff into the world of online instruction.

A Minor, In Time: International Student Stays on Course in Winter Session

For the 3,400 international students in Rutgers’s diverse student body, online courses taken during summer and winter terms enable them to be in two places at once.

Hailing from more than 115 countries, international students use online courses to hurdle time and distance barriers to complete required courses, pursue a minor, or chase other academic goals.

Bhagyawati Sanghani is one of those. She’s an international student who took a class even though she traveled back home to India over winter break.

Taking an online class -- remotely from her family’s home – as part of Winter Session at Rutgers University-New Brunswick allowed her to graduate with a minor in Public Health in May 2015. That minor rounded out her degree in Biological Sciences from the School of Environmental & Biological Sciences.

Rutgers' First Coding Bootcamp Launches in Fall

Web development program’s goal to prepare students for high-demand digital careers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers will launch New Jersey’s first-ever coding boot camp in October, a program specifically designed to teach adult learners and part-time students the skills they need for careers in web development, a high-demand area for the digital economy.

The boot camp, a 24-week certificate program offered by Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies to the general public, combines on-campus classes in New Brunswick with online work and will be held two evenings a week and for four hours on Saturday. Enrollment closes October 26 and the first class is scheduled October 27.

New State-of-the-Art Hands-On Radon Training Facility Built This Summer at Rutgers

For over 25 years, the Eastern Regional Radon Training Center (ERRTC) at Rutgers University has been providing training in radon measurement and mitigation to professionals throughout the country. To improve the learning experience for students, the ERRTC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art training facility on the Cook Campus in summer 2015.

“Watching the new radon training facility being built from the ground up has been really interesting,” said Program Coordinator Pamela Springard-Mayer.

The new facility was used for the first time by students attending the July 15 Radon Mitigation class.

In the past, the hands-on portions of the Rutgers three-day Radon Mitigation Proficiency Course were taught at Rutgers' Environmental Health and Safety Building (affectionately known as "the slab") on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway.

The (Environmental) Science of Investigation: Interactive Forensics Training Helps Environmental Professionals Solve Petroleum Contamination Cases

When a site is contaminated with petroleum products, there are many questions. How did it happen? When did it happen? And, most importantly, who is responsible for paying to clean it up?

This fall, Rutgers University's Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) will help professionals answer those questions in its completely revamped Environmental Forensics training course.

Designed for environmental consultants, attorneys, hazardous material emergency responders and professionals in related fields, the two-day class (September 9-10, 2015) will reveal the science behind the environmental forensics of petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbon geochemistry. Students will also learn about new trends in professional investigations.

As a pharmaceutical industry leadership development professional, Bejoy Philip draws insights from a novel source – his alter ego, the rap artist named Wize.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, Philip lived the hip-hop dream, performing on weekends as Wize and producing five albums from 2006 to 2011. By day, he was a project manager and process engineer in the banking industry, but he found his avocation as a musician “almost was an alter ego.”

Philip lived in two worlds – until a move into leadership development enabled him to combine his two passions: inspiring others with words and music, and developing people and organizations in the business world.
